− 16 yr old racing driver recognised for achievements in sport −
Team HARD racing driver, Damani Marcano is a finalist in the Haringey Outstanding For All Awards, Achievement in Sports or Physical Activity category. The awards are the London borough’s way of recognising local talent and accomplishments and it’s a huge honour for Damani to be recognised for his recent achievements in racing.
During 2015 Damani competed in the VW Racing Cup and the VAG Trophy – the youngest driver on the grid by years. 16 year old Damani has excelled in his first season, working his way into top 10 positions having never raced a car before. He began his first step into racing cars this year with the backing of Team HARD Racing, the largest team in the Volkswagen Racing Cup and a fan favourite in the British Touring Car Championships.
Up against experienced adult drivers, Damani was the only competitor in the Volkswagen Racing Cup series who is too young to hold a road driving license. He became the youngest driver to score points in the first round of a Volkswagen Racing Cup season and ended the year in the top-7 on pace, challenging experienced adult drivers who had spent the season leading the championship. As a guest driver in the VAG Trophy, Damani also became the youngest driver to qualify on the front row and obtain fastest lap in a race.
Team HARD racing driver Damani Marcano comments: “It’s really amazing to be a finalist for the Haringey Outstanding for all Award. It’s a huge honour and responsibility. The person who ultimately receives the award will have 100% deserved it! If that person happens to be me, it will aid in my ambition to give talks at schools to show what is possible when young people like me work hard and follow their dreams.”
Having also achieved As and A*s in his GCSEs this year, Damani now studies Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Design & Technology at A-Level at a 6th form school in Haringey. The Haringey Outstanding For All Awards will be announced on Tuesday 8th December in a ceremony taking place at Alexandra Palace.

Damani piloted a fully race prepared VW Golf GTI R Cup Car in the Volkswagen Racing Cup alongside regular proven and experienced racing drivers. Damani is the only driver in the series who was too young to drive on public roads. Racing in the VW Cup was Damani’s first step on a multi-year programme to eventually race in the British Touring Car Championships (BTCC).
VW Golf GTiR Cup Car: a 260 bhp race-prepared hatch-back capable of speeds of up to 150mph. These cars are based on a road car but stripped of all parts, not essential to racing, and fitted with a safety roll-cage meeting safety regulations of the VW Racing Cup. Additional differences include adjustable racing suspension and racing tyres that increase the amount of grip, and therefore cornering speeds that the car is then capable of.
