Since last year I had an idea for a show about the things that most people don’t realise under 17s can do in cars. Supercar driving experiences, track-days, even racing on the British GT Championship weekends like me, are just some of the things you can do before you take your driving test. There’s even a special kind of hatchback that you can drive solo on the road before you are 17.
When I heard about the Top Gear auditions, I thought this is the perfect opportunity to make this idea happen. Top Gear decided to limit the auditions for 17s and over (even if you don’t have a driver license) for safety reasons. I think they probably didn’t realise that at 16 you can have a full class ‘A’ MSA racing license, like me. There are a lot of things I can do that a 17 year old, with or without a road-license aren’t allowed to do so I started tweeting about it using #GetDamaniOnTopGear.
If I listened when people said it wasn’t realistic to want to be a racing driver, then I’d be nowhere now so I’ll be doing an audition anyway. Hopefully they will change their minds. If not, who knows where it will lead!
